DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — DeKalb County police are investigating a shooting at an apartment complex that has left two people dead.
According to police spokesperson Jacques Spencer, the shooting happened in the 4900 block of Russwood Avenue near Stone Mountain Wednesday. Both victims were taken to the hospital but Spencer later confirmed their deaths.
On Thursday, officers released more information, saying the shooting stemmed from a dispute between three people - a victim and two suspects.
The victim and one of the suspects died, according to the Spencer. Police said the third person, 32-year-old Mario Wright, was charged with murder.
Officers said the now-deceased suspect shot the victim. Then, Wright allegedly shot the first suspect.
According to the incident report, a witness told officers she heard the shots from her apartment. When she looked to see what was happening, she saw a man running out into the parking lot with a gun. She saw a second man running after him who also had a gun. The witness said she heard more gunfire and then saw the first man collapse in the grass.
Spencer told 11Alive Wednesday that the preliminary investigation suggested that the incident may have involved in what police described as "risky behavior" such as drug activity.
During the investigation, police also located an apartment with potentially hazardous materials. That led to a HAZMAT response from DeKalb Fire which ultimately determined the air in the apartment to be normal. Before that confirmation, police evacuated nearby apartments.
