5 arrested for allegedly ransacking home, setting elderly woman on fire

Officials said the suspects apparently ransacked the home before leaving. Then one returned with a flammable liquid and set the resident aflame.  Now investigators want to know why and, more importantly, who?

Three suspects were arrested after police say they ransacked a woman's home and set her on fire.

GRANTVILLE, Ga. -- Police have made a total of five arrests after several people broke into and ransacked a home before setting an elderly woman on fire.

Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office reports that they arrested 17-year-old Sanquavious Cameron, 38-year-old Justin Grady and 18-year-old Cortavious Heard in connection to the brutal attack. They've all been been charged with at least seven crimes each, ranging from criminal attempt felony murder to first degree arson to Identity theft fraud.

Heard and Grady each face additional charges related to a previous incident in which the same victim's purse turned up missing.

On Wednesday, they reported two additional arrests - one of 17-year-old Mina Christine Ellery and 17-year-old Angel Latrice Harmon both of Newnan, Ga.

Ellery and Harmon face charges of criminal attempt at felony murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, armed robbery, criminal attempt at arson in the first degree, burglary in the first degree and battery. They also face charges in a separate incident at the same location where they apparently stole a purse. Those charges include first degree burglary, financial transaction card theft and identity theft.

The arrests stem from an incident on Thursday when deputies and paramedics responded to the 7700 block of Forrest Road in Grantville due to reports of someone unlawfully entering.

But as police investigated, the story took an even more disturbing turn.

Police believe that the person at the home, an elderly woman who was not identified, was sleeping at the time that several suspects made entry.

They then proceeded to ransack the residence and assaulted the woman when she woke up. Police believe the suspects were looking for one of her relatives.

They group then left but, unfortunately, this is not where the story ends. Police said one returned moments later with a flammable liquid, pouring it on the elderly woman and then setting her on fire.

Police said the woman was able to extinguish the fire herself and was eventually able to contact 911.

She has since been taken to an area hospital for treatment.
