Bar owner in Athens arrested on rape, kidnapping charges

Arrest warrants say he grabbed the victim "and pulled her to the back storage area of the bar.”

ATHENS, Ga. — The owner of two popular bars in Athens was arrested last night and booked on rape charges, police said.

David Ippisch, 38, is the owner of Hedges on Broad and 100 Proof. He was booked for rape, kidnapping, sexual battery and two counts of battery, Athens-Clarke County Police said. He is accused of assaulting a 21-year-old woman at Hedges on Nov. 24.

She reported the crime about two hours after the bar closed, police said.

Ippisch was arrested at the bar Monday afternoon.

Arrest warrants say sometime between midnight and 2 a.m., Ippisch grabbed the victim "and pulled her to the back storage area of the bar.”

The warrant said Ippisch “(grabbed) her by the neck / jaw, forcing her to drink from a bottle,” and raped her – her injuries verified by “multiple (sexual assault) nurses."

The warrant doesn't specify the contents of the bottle.

He remains in jail without bond Tuesday evening. Police say the victim is not a University of Georgia student.

Both bars owned by the suspect, located on Broad Street in downtown Athens, are hot spots for University of Georgia students -- located just a few feet down the sidewalk from the landmark UGA arch.

Records at the Georgia Secretary of State's office indicate Ippisch incorporated his business ten years ago.

Anyone with information concerning this case is asked to contact Det. David Harrison at 762-400-7361 or Lt. Derek Scott at 762-400-7068.
