CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Former Clayton County Sheriff's Deputy Edward Hobbs surrendered to authorities Friday night on theft-related and violation of oath charges.

According to a release from Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill's office, Hobbs failed to turn in a computer and cellphone that he had confiscated from a suspect more than a year ago. The computer was found at the residence of the former deputy.

Hobbs resigned from the sheriff's office in 2018. He was arrested last year on insurance fraud and forgery charges.

According to Hill's office, a woman struck an unmarked sheriff's office car that Hobbs was driving last year. In that incident, no damage was found on either vehicle. Both Hobbs and the woman who struck Hobbs stated they were not injured.

The sheriff's office said that Hobbs later went to a hospital for treatment, but neglected to report this to the sheriff's office.

The release indicated that Hobbs contacted the woman's insurance company and submitted a claim, by way of a falsified letter from his supervisor which allegedly stated that he was out of work for a time period while he was actually working.

As a result, Hobbs received compensation.

Due to actions, all of the arrest cases attributed to Hobbs are now under review by the Clayton County Sheriff's Office and the office of the Clayton County District Attorney.
