Fire extinguisher backfires on would-be dollar store burglar

Deputies are looking for the suspect that can be seen trying to break into the store before the fire extinguisher went off, obscuring him from view.

Deputies in Coweta County are looking for a suspect who was caught on video trying to use a fire extinguisher to break into a Dollar General store on Wednesday, January 2.

According to a police report, deputies responded to the Dollar General store in the 4800 block of Highway 34 at about 6:20 p.m. on that evening after a report of an earlier alarm. A deputy had been initially dispatched at about 4:20 that morning but was not able to meet with a representative from the store since that person had struck a deer while en route to the store.

When checking surveillance video, it was discovered that someone had attempted to break into the front door with a fire extinguisher at about 4:13 a.m.

The suspect was wearing light-colored clothing and a mask.

On the video, the person could be seen stepping into view from the left side and striking the left side of the door. At that point, the fire extinguisher went off, obscuring the suspect.

The person was not able to gain entry to the store, and nothing was reported damaged or stolen from the store.

Deputies were not able to obtain the fire extinguisher or any other evidence.
