JACKSON COUNTY, Ga. — Investigators in Jackson County say a woman has died and the man who allegedly shot her is in critical condition after a night of violence in Rockdale County.
Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum said that around 9:50 p.m. on Thursday, deputies were sent to Preakness Trail outside of Jefferson in reference to an alarming call. The caller told 911 dispatch that a man in the home had shot her mother and then himself.
Deputies arrived to find both subjects injured. The male suspect and the woman were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville for treatment. However, the woman, later identified as 40-year-old Stephanie Wade Ellis of Jefferson, later died of her injuries.
The male, who hasn't been named by the sheriff's office, remains in critical condition at the hospital. Both the Jackson County Criminal Investigations Division and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Scene Unit have since begun an investigation. That investigation remains active.
