BERKELEY LAKE, Ga. — A Gwinnett County package thief appears to have moved beyond the usual porch pirate strategy - because somehow he got a key.
Police said that between Dec. 2 and Dec. 9, 2018, an unidentified man was shown on surveillance video getting out of the front passenger seat of a silver Ford Focus and using a U.S. Postal Service key to open a large mailbox. He then stole packages from the box and left.
This happened in the 4040 block of S. Berkeley Lake Road - the address of Berkely Lake City Hall. Investigators said he's not a postal worker though it appeared he did have white USPS boxes in his trunk.
One of the stolen items, a pack of business checks, was later altered and used illegally in the Atlanta area.
Anyone with information on the suspect is asked to call Gwinnett County Police Department detectives at 770-513-5300.
The nearby city of Duluth has had similar complaints and police there are also investigating - though surveillance cameras weren't available in those locations.
Calling it a nationwide issue, Duluth Police suggested that locals not use the blue drop-off mailboxes for now and instead bring their packages inside.
In both cases, tips can be provided to the department or, alternatively, Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477 (TIPS). The latter would allow tipsters to remain anonymous. They would also be eligible for a cash reward.
