Police investigate whether body found in Carrollton linked to attempted Waffle House robbery

VILLA RICA, Ga. -- Authorities in Villa Rica are working to determine if a robbery gone wrong is connected to a death investigation in Carrollton.

According to police, a customer inside of a Waffle House shot a man who allegedly tried to rob the restaurant.

It happened around 12:30 a.m. at the Waffle House on Highway 61 in Villa Rica.

Officers said the suspect came inside and pointed a gun at employees, saying he was there to rob the business. But a customer shot the man, who left the scene.

Witnesses told police the suspect left in a small, dark-colored vehicle.

Authorities later discovered that the suspect dropped his weapon as he was leaving the scene. The gun turned out to a BB gun.

In the news release, Villa Rica Police said they are aware that Carrollton Police Department is investigating the discovery of a dead person. They are working with them to see if the cases are connected.

Around 8 a.m. Carrollton Police found a man's body off of Spring and College streets. First responders reported that the body was lying outside a vehicle that was backed into a wooded area off the road.

The victim had suffered an apparent gunshot wound. The death investigation is still underway.
