Police: Stolen gun used in accidental shooting, suicide of two teens in Lawrenceville

The gun was reported stolen just days before.

The gun used in an accidental shooting that killed one teen and caused another to commit suicide was stolen the day before their deaths, Gwinnett County Police said Friday.

15-year-old Devin Hodges shot and killed himself on Monday after accidentally shooting 17-year-old Chad Carless, police said. Hodges and Carless were hanging out in a shed on Riverlanding Circle near Lawrenceville when police said Hodges pulled out the gun to show it to his friends. It went off and shot Carless, who was sitting next to him.

The teens called 911 but Carless died at the scene. As police arrived, Hodges turned the gun on himself.

On Friday, investigators said the gun used in the shooting was reported stolen on Dec. 30 by a man who reported that his car was broken into while it was parked outside a home off Oak Lane in unincorporated Lawrenceville.

The man told police he parked his car outside the home about 5:45 p.m. on Dec. 30 and came back about an hour later to find the passenger door open.

He told police his holster was lying on the ground and a flashlight was found in the front seat. Police said the gun was stolen out of the glove box.
