Repeat offender in and out of jail, accused in burglaries in two states

Swift is currently locked up in the DeKalb County Jail, accused of yet another burglary.

Sometimes, crimes are committed by repeat offenders.

That seems to be the case when it comes to an upscale Brookhaven neighborhood recently targeted in burglaries.

Authorities said Shamonta Swift has been arrested multiple times across three counties for burglary. However, authorities say he still finds a way to get out of jail and target more homeowners.

Based on records, Swift appears to be a career criminal with repeated run-ins with the law in Georgia and Alabama. Investigators said Swift and two others recently targeted a Brookhaven neighborhood recently.

"People are scared and also feel very violated," one resident of the neighborhood said.

Here's surveillance from outside one home.

A look at Swift's criminal background:

  • Since 2008, he's been arrested in Gwinnett County on burglary, criminal damage to property, theft, and fleeing from police
  • He was locked up in 2010 and 2013 for forgery.
  • In 2017, authorities arrested swift for four burglaries in Jefferson County, Alabama. An Alabama sheriff said Swift skipped town last year, and now has 11 arrest warrants in that state. They are all related to burglaries.

"The same M.O.," a resident said. "Lately they're either kicking in carport or garage doors."

"Alarm, or no alarm, they're usually looking for three things guns, jewelry or electronics."

Swift is currently locked up in the DeKalb County Jail, accused of yet another burglary.

"It makes me angry that they won't hold him in jail longer," the resident expressed.

Court documents show Swift usually bonds out and is placed on probation. After that, it seems that another crime is committed.

The District Attorney's office in DeKalb County said Swift hasn't been indicted on last month's burglary charges.
