An employee of a Chinese restaurant faces charges after he shot a customer who tried to leave without paying and a fellow employee.

According to DeKalb County Police, the customer tried to walk out of the China Café near the intersection of Rainbow Drive and Candler Road Wednesday night without paying for his meal.

Police said one employee followed the man to confront him about it, but was assaulted by the customer. Other employees of the business tried to jump in to help, but were also attacked in the process.

That's when police said 34-year-old Xin Xing Chen went back inside the store, grabbed a gun and shot the customer, leaving him in critical condition.

Police said Chen also shot a fellow employee by mistake, but that person is stable.

Authorities charged Chen with aggravated assault for his role in the shooting.

Meanwhile, the customer who was shot is in police custody while investigators look into the circumstances that led up to the shooting.
