Serial bank robber heading to prison after confession, officials say

After he's caught for one bank robbery, the suspect says he's got 'a few more things to get off his chest'

ALBANY, Ga. — The U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia said on Friday that a Florida man has been sentenced to 78 months in prison after confessing to robbing three banks in three states.

U.S. Attorney Charles "Charlie" Peeler said that 38-year-old Avery Williams of Quincy was sentenced on Thursday, July 11, by US District Judge W. Louis Sands in Albany, Ga.

Williams is currently serving time in a Florida prison for a prior bank robbery conviction, and his federal sentence will run concurrently. There is no parole in the federal system.

According to a signed plea agreement, Williams admitted to robbing the Peoples South Bank in the 700 block of Westover Boulevard in Albany on September 9, 2016. He could be seen on surveillance video walking into the bank and passing a note to the teller demanding cash.

After that robbery, agents were able to determine that he was likely the same person responsible for a bank robbery in Dothan, Ala., on August 18, 2016. Eight months following the Albany hold-up, Williams was arrested on May 3, 2017, for a bank robbery in Sarasota, Fla.

Under oath, Williams admitted to the Florida robbery and said he had "a few more things to get off his chest," before admitting to the bank robberies in Albany and Dothan, officials said.

"Law enforcement caught up to this serial bank robber well before his conscience did," Peeler said.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
