WALKER COUNTY, Ga. -- State agents are on the way to northwest Georgia to investigate a shooting involving a law enforcement officer.

According to NBC affiliate WRCB, the shooting happened in the area of Sherry Drive and Raydine Lane in Walker County. Rossville police confirmed that one person was shot.

The sheriff told WRCB that they are searching for the suspects in the shooting. Speaking with reporter Caitlyn Chastain, police said two deputies were conducting a traffic stop when the driver opened fire.

They fired back and believe they struck the driver but he managed to get away. Police originally misidentified the suspect and a possible passenger but have since said that they can't be responsible since one is in jail already and the other was found in his home elsewhere.

So, investigators are still trying to identify those responsible as they interview neighbors and canvass the woods near the scene.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed that its agents were heading to the scene but have not yet provided any other information.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as they become available.
