NORCROSS, Ga. — School officials said a student brought a gun to Beaver Ridge Elementary School on Wednesday.
Karen Lillard, principal at Beaver Ridge Elementary School in Norcross, sent home a letter to parents on Wednesday, letting them know about the incident.
"Our administrators received a tip that a student may have a weapon on campus," Lillard's letter said. "We moved quickly to investigate and during our search, we did find that a student had a gun in his possession."
The student apparently showed the gun to another student but did not threaten anyone with it.
"He did not state any intention to hurt anyone," Lillard said in the letter. "That said, this is a very serious situation so in addition to criminal charges for having a weapon on campus, the student also will face disciplinary action."
Lillard's letter pointed out that another student reported the presence of the gun on campus and that the student carrying the gun was showing it to other students. She commended the student for reporting the situation, and asked other students to follow the practice of "see something, say something," going forward.
About 1,170 students attend Beaver Ridge Elementary in grades K-5.
