CLARKSTON, Ga. -- Nearly 200 students at the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf in Clarkston were told to stay home Tuesday by officials after the school received an unspecified threat.

After contacting Clarkston Police, school superintendent John Serrano sent a letter to parents on Monday detailing their decision. They said they are asking students not to report to school until further notice is given.

"The investigation is ongoing, but at this time, we are making the decision to close school tomorrow, August 21, 2018. No students should report to classes at AASD until further notice is given. We have already implemented heightened security measures, including an increased police presence, but at this time we believe closing school is in the best interest of students and faculty," the letter from Serrano said, in part.

The scope and the nature of the threat were not revealed by school officials, but they said they felt it was in the best interest of the students and faculty, and are fully cooperating with the investigation by law enforcement.

The school serves deaf and hard of hearing students from across metro Atlanta between the ages of 3 and 22 with a standard curriculum for preschool through grade 12, along with test preparation, classes and work experience for students through their 22nd birthday.
