DeKalb County Board of Education votes to cut ties with superintendent

“We appreciate Dr. Green for his service to the county and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” Board Chair Dr. Michael A. Erwin said.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The DeKalb County School District is in search for a new superintendent.

On Monday, the Board of Education voted to approve a separation agreement with Superintendent Dr. R. Stephen Green, effective immediately.

“We appreciate Dr. Green for his service to the county and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” Board Chair Dr. Michael A. Erwin said.

Green announced in May he wouldn't renew his contract, but he was supposed to work though the school year to assist with transition.

However, with a vote, the board decided to cut ties. In a second vote, the board named Ramona Tyson as the interim superintendent.

Tyson brings 32 years of total service to the district, serving as teacher, administrator, deputy chief superintendent, interim superintendent, chief of staff to three superintendents, and chief administrator to the board of education.

“With Dr. Green’s immediate departure, we have the utmost confidence in Ms. Tyson serving as the interim superintendent," Erwin said. "The separation agreement will have no impact on our current superintendent search, and we are fully committed to an open and transparent process, as evidenced by our current online survey and last week’s community forums.”

Tyson has announced her retirement on June 30, 2020.

The district said the nationwide search is being conducted by BWP & Associates.
