DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Extra staff and animal control are searching Smoke Rise Elementary in DeKalb County after a second grader was bitten by a snake.

The child was participating in a P.E. class on the playground when they were bitten by the snake in a field on Tuesday. Emergency and medical crews responded. According to a letter sent to parents, the snake was shown to emergency crews and they believed it to be non-venomous.

“However, out of an abundance of caution, the student was transported to the hospital to be fully examined,” the parent letter read.

DeKalb County School District said that Smoke Rise Elementary leaders contacted animal control and operational services, which sent extra crews to monitor the playground for more wildlife. The district said that extra staff will be added to the playground as a precautionary measure until the end of the school year.

“The safety of our students is paramount … we encourage you to speak with your children about wildlife, especially as we begin our summer break,” the parent letter stated. “Please let them know to always observe wild animals from a safe distance with an adult present and to inform an adult whenever they see a wild animal, whether at home or on school grounds.”
