Elementary school placed on soft lockdown after gun fired nearby

Police said two men got into a fight at a store near the school.

FLOYD COUNTY, Ga. — Floyd County Police said an altercation between two men led to a gun being fired near an elementary school Monday.

According to Chris Fincher of  Floyd County Police, Alto Park Elementary, which is located on  Burnett Ferry Road in Rome, was placed on a soft lockdown while officers investigated.

Police said two men got into a fight at a store near the school. Fincher said one of the men was put on the ground during the altercation and a gun fell off of him. A person picked up the weapon and fired a shot before leaving the scene. It is unclear if one of the men involved fired the shot.

The school released an alert about the incident, saying the soft lockdown was just a precautionary measure. The full message is below:

ALERT: Alto Park Elementary has gone into a soft lockdown as a precautionary safety measure due to an outside incident happening in the Alto Park community. There is NO threat at the actual school. We are having a safe and normal school day.

Police are still investigating.
