Morehouse College installs its 12th president

"What draws me to Morehouse is that I see a connection between what I value and what this college has always represented."

ATLANTA — Morehouse College has installed Dr. David A. Thomas as its 12th president.

The school held the inauguration Thursday on the school's 152nd birthday. The ceremony launched the beginning of activities for the Morehouse Founder's week.

Thomas took office at the beginning of last year after his October 2017 appointment ended a sixth month period of transition, according to the college's officials.

"What draws me to Morehouse is that I see a connection between what I value and what this college has always represented — the mission to develop men with disciplined minds who will lead lives of leadership and service, and to be stewards of black culture and community,” Thomas said about leading Morehouse. “There is no place like Morehouse on the planet.”

Morehouse said its enrollment applications have increased by 43 percent since Dr. Thomas has come along. They also said they've received grants for educational programs and have renovated two residential halls under his leadership.

Thomas is developing a capital campaign that will hold funds to be used for renovations, expanding the digital network, scholarships, and launching academic initiatives.

The school is also holding other inaugural events and activities for the next few days. View the schedule here.
