Report: 7 top Georgia high schools in Metro Atlanta

More than 400 Georgia schools made the list of the Best High Schools for 2017, including one that ranked gold and in the top 100 for the country’s best. And seven of the top 10 in Georgia were in Metro Atlanta.

ATLANTA – More than 400 Georgia schools made the list of the Best High Schools for 2017, including one that ranked gold and in the top 100 for the country’s best. And seven of the top 10 in Georgia were in Metro Atlanta.

Metro Atlanta-area schools: DeKalb School of Arts, Walton High School, Fulton Science Academy, Cambridge High School, Northview High School, Alpharetta High School and North Gwinnett High School made the top 10 high schools in Georgia, according to a U.S. News & World Report ranking.

Two Georgia schools ranked in the top 100, out of more than 22,000 public schools across all 50 states and Washington, D.C. They included Columbus High School and DeKalb School of the Arts.

DeKalb School of the Arts ranked 2nd in Georgia and No. 89 in the country, earning a gold medal for performance. Out of the Georgia schools ranked in the 2017 list, a total of 18 were honored with gold medals, 45 were awarded with silver and 48 earned bronze.

The creative arts-centric school is one of 23 schools in the county and is located at 1192 Clarendon Ave., in Avondale Estates, Ga.

According to U.S. News & World Report, schools were ranked based on performance on state-required tests and how well their students were prepared for college.

DeKalb School of the Arts ranking by the numbers:

  • Teachers: 24
  • Enrollment: 370
  • Minorities: 69 percent
  • Female students: 75 percent
  • Male students: 25 percent
  • Economically disadvantaged: 27 percent
  • Graduation rate: 100 percent
