Game of Thrones show creators sign on for new Star Wars movies

Honorees David Benioff, Emilia Clarke and D. B. Weiss pose with awards during 18th Annual AFI Awards at Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills on January 5, 2018 in Los Angeles, California.

Fans of Game of Thrones could soon find themselves on an intergalactic trip piloted by some familiar names.

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, creators of the hit HBO series, have signed on to produce a new series of Star Wars films according to StarWars.com.

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

The two have released a statement acknowledging the honor - and terror - of being allowed to steer part of one of their childhood favorite franchises.

"In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away," the two said. "And we've been dreaming of it ever since."

Right now there are no release dates for the new films.
