Hispanic students get mentors to improve grad rates

Gwinnett County Schools Hispanic Mentoring program met the goal for mentors, but is still looking for more volunteers.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — The Gwinnett County Schools Hispanic Mentoring Program launched this week at Meadowcreek High School. The programs goal is to increase graduation rates among Hispanic students.

115 students participated on Tuesday night. Berkmar Middle School 6th grader, Maria Lopez-Saldana was one of them. There, she met her mentor Julie Gomez for the first time at Meadowcreek High School.

"I was nervous, I didn't know what we were going to do," Lopez-Saldana said. Maria has already expressed to Julie that she needs help in boosting her grades in school.

"It means a lot, that means that she will open up and she will be the person that she would like to be," Gomez said.

The program was organized by Academic Support Director, Nury Crawford. Crawford says that they have surpassed their goal of 65 mentors and mentees.

Right now, there are only 76 mentors in the program. Crawford says the students without mentors will still be visited by Gwinnett County Schools Community Base Mentoring Program.
