The number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in metro Atlanta continues to increase, with only the southwest portion of the state rivaling its level of increase. Much of that increase continues to be reflected in Fulton, DeKalb and Clayton counties. Scroll down for details.
Atlanta's northeastern metro counties -- particularly Gwinnett and Hall counties -- are seeing a surge in confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the most recent numbers released by the Department of Public Health. In comparison, counties in far Southwest Georgia remain the area which shows the highest number of cases relative to their populations.
State and federal officials with the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are continually monitoring the spread of the virus. They are also working hand-in-hand with the World Health Organization to track the spread around the world and to stop it.
Key Facts:
- There have been 1,444 deaths in Georgia, with the state's earliest reported death on March 5. Over the last 14 days (4/28-5/11), the average daily increase in newly reported deaths was 29.14. Over the previous 14-day period (4/14-4/27), the average daily increase in newly reported deaths was 36.71.
- There have been 34,002 cases confirmed in Georgia, with the state's earliest reported case on Feb. 1. Over the last 14 days, the average daily increase in newly confirmed cases was 654.14. Over the previous 14-day period, the average daily increase in newly confirmed cases was 689.07.
- There have been 6,036 total patients hospitalized in Georgia during the pandemic, according to the Department of Public Health's cumulative total. Over the last 14 days, the average daily increase in new patients was 81.07. Over the previous 14-day period, the average daily increase in new patients was 118.86.
- The Georgia Emergency Management Agency began reporting current statewide hospitalizations on May 1. That day they reported 1,500 current hospitalizations. By the most recent report on May 11, there were 1,133 current hospitalizations.
- Gov. Brian Kemp's statewide shelter-in-place order expired at midnight on April 30. However, his order for the elderly and medically-fragile remains in effect until June 12.
- All public schools in Georgia closed through the end of the school year
- Public Health Emergency remains in effect.
Increase in cases, case rate noticeable in metro Atlanta
The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in metro Atlanta continues to increase, with only the southwest portion of the state rivaling its level of increase.
Much of that increase continues to be reflected in Fulton, DeKalb and Clayton counties.
As of Monday evening, Fulton County has more than 3,500 cases and reflects a rate of 319.87 cases per 100,000 people. Neighboring DeKalb County has a total of 2,555 cases with a nearly identical case rate of 322.13 cases per 100,000 people.
The case rate in Clayton County, just south of the city of Atlanta, is slightly lower, at 307.67 cases per 100,000 people. The total number of cases there is lower (944), which reflects the lower population in that county.

APD reported 14 positive COVID-19 cases since pandemic began
Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields announced to the city council on Monday that in eight weeks, 14 employees tested positive for COVID-19. Since then, nine have returned to work.
Shields said the department decontaminated 150 facilities and 360 vehicles.
Employees within the department are getting temperature checks, prior to beginning their shifts, and must wear masks.
Gov. Kemp, state officials to give update
The governor's office announced a media briefing on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the State Capitol.
Gov. Brian Kemp, Georgia Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Kathleen Toomey, Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency Director Homer Bryson, and Georgia National Guard Adjutant General Tom Carden will be at the event.

Trails reopen at area national parks
Trails at two Atlanta area national parks have reopened.
Visitors on Monday could access all trails and some parking areas at the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area and Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park and enter both parks for free.
Officials planned to keep a close eye for any crowds or other violations of public health guidance.
New 1 p.m. numbers released
The Georgia Department of Health announced new cases of COVID-19 on Monday. As of 1 p.m., there are 33,927 confirmed cases of the virus and 1,441 deaths reported. This is up from the 33,508 confirmed cases and 1,405 deaths that they announced on Sunday evening.
Of the 33,927 confirmed cases, 3,516 are in Fulton, 2,544 are in DeKalb, 2,457 are in Gwinnett, 2,176 are in Cobb and 2,026 are in Hall. For a breakdown by county, view the 11Alive interactive map.
They said 6,015 patients have been hospitalized with COVID-19.

Duluth City Hall, public works to reopen
City offices in Duluth at City Hall and the Public Works facility will reopen to the public on Thursday, they said. Municipal Court will reopen to the public on Monday, May 18. All Parks and Recreation buildings will remain closed.
For Municipal Court, only the defendant and counsel will be allowed in the courtroom, unless the defendant needs an interpreter, or if the defendant is under 21, in which case, one parent can accompany the defendant.
They said masks will be required for those conducting business in person.
Johns Creek opening some parks
The City of Johns Creek plans to re-open select public parks and facilities on Friday, May 15.
Walking trails, park restrooms, picnic pavilions tennis courts and athletic fields (no organized play) will open.
The following facilities will remain closed:
- Basketball Courts
- Playgrounds
- Newtown Dog Park
- Mark Burkhalter Amphitheater
- Park Place Senior Center
- Newtown Park Community Clubhouse
- Autrey Mill Nature Preserve’s Visitors Center & Indoor Facilities
Dept. of Public Health releasing data on new schedule
The Georgia Department of Public Health announced that beginning today, they'd release new data three times a day at 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
"This change will enable more consistent reporting while still providing timely and actionable data," they said.
As of 9 a.m., there were 33,833 cases confirmed in Georgia with 1,405 deaths.
