200-bed hospital for COVID-19 patients being constructed at World Congress Center
The state of Georgia has entered into a contract with the Virginia-based supply firm PAE to build a 200-hospital bed alternate care facility at the Georgia World Congress Center.
“Across Georgia, we have partnered with existing healthcare infrastructure to greatly expand our surge capacity, and now we have a dedicated team building out a temporary facility at the Georgia World Congress Center for potential COVID-19 patient surge,” said Gov. Brian Kemp in a release on Sunday afternoon.
The Georgia National Guard, GEMA, the Department of Community Health, Georgia Department of Public Health, and contractors will begin to prepare the GWCC for a potential COVID-19 patient surge for mild to moderate illness levels, excluding ventilator support.
The project at GWCC will leverage existing support through Grady Memorial Hospital with its initial operating capacity available within one week. Over the next few days, Gov. Kemp says he plans to provide more details about the facility.
12,452 confirmed cases, with 433 deaths reported on Sunday afternoon
The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Georgia has increased to 12,452 overnight, according to the latest figures from the Georgia Department of Public Health with 433 deaths being reported statewide at noon on Sunday.
The largest number of cases in the state remains in Fulton County, with a total of 1,467. 50 deaths have been reported there. The highest number of fatalities from COVID-19 in the state continues to be reported from Dougherty County, where 72 people have lost their lives. A total of 1,154 cases have been confirmed there.
Additional highly reported totals are in the metro area: In DeKalb County, 869 cases have been reported with 14 deaths. In Cobb County, there are 714 cases, with 32 death; In Gwinnett County, 690 cases of coronavirus have been reported with 19 deaths, while in Clayton County 362 cases have been reported with 11 deaths. In Hall County, 279 cases have been reported, but no one has died there. Finally, in Henry County, 260 people have been reported to have contracted the virus with 3 deaths.

Coronavirus cases and deaths rise in evening update
The 7 p.m. update from the Georgia Department of Public Health shows confirmed cases in the state have risen to 12,261 with 432 deaths. Of the total number of cases, 2,491 have resulted in hospitalization - or roughly 20 percent.
Fulton County continues to lead in the number of cases with 1,446. However, it has the second-most deaths behind Dougherty County in south Georgia which has 72. The south Georgia county also has the second-highest number of confirmed cases with 1,102.
