Georgia Tech Head Coach Geoff Collins discusses coronavirus impacts on college football

Geoff Collins is finding new ways to lead his program during unprecedented times.

ATLANTA — Georgia Tech Football Head Coach Geoff Collins and his program are in the same position as schools all over the country, spring football halted because of the coronavirus.

“You could kind of feel that something was coming as cases kept popping up around the country,” said Collins.

“A lot of the college football programs are not fortunate enough to have gotten six practices in there like we were. What the accommodations will be for preseason camp or even for the summer are to be determined, but I think the health and safety of everybody is at the forefront of everyone’s mind.”

He was very pleased with the significant strength gains his team made in six spring practices.

“We challenged our team that we wanted to gain on average of 10 pounds per person per man, and now the challenge will be that we are all apart from each other to continue those gains.”

Now he’s having to get creative to keep those climbing.

“We have such a young, energetic coaching staff that our coaches do the workouts too. I got up at 4:30 a.m to do my piece of it.”

As we are all trying to navigate this new normal it means having family around work environment at all hours of the day. During the interview, Coach Collins’ 3-year-old daughter, Astrid, decided she wanted to play peak-a-boo to make her dad smile.

“Probably for the last 10 nights we’ve actually gotten an opportunity to sit down and have dinner together. In this day in age of Uber Eats and running a Power Five football program, that doesn’t happen. For that to be able to happen has kind of been nice.”

A small reminder to cherish normal life activities we may take for granted, or have to miss out on.
