Group of South Fulton firefighters self-quarantine after assisting coronavirus patient

The firefighters who helped the patient are not showing any symptoms of COVID-19.

SOUTH FULTON, Ga. — A group of South Fulton firefighters have self-quarantined after they assisted a coronavirus patient last week.

On Friday, a Fulton County Schools employee started feeling sick at the school and called 911.  Superintendent Mike Looney said the teacher was transported from the school campus. The sick teacher, who worked at two schools, tested positive for the virus.

Sterling Jones, the deputy fire chief, said they decided to be proactive by separating the personnel. They are also doing a thorough deep cleaning at Station 15.

"We are actually going to clean the station from top to bottom," We're going to use federally recommended products and procedures," he said.

"We are going to do the station the equipment and everything else inside the facility," Jones added.

The firefighters who helped the patient are not showing any symptoms of COVID-19. They are quarantined only as a precaution.

Station 15 is currently closed, but Jones said the community won't be impacted.

"There will be no lapse in coverage whatsoever," he said.

Jones said they have automatic aid agreements with Union City and Fairburn.

"So they're going to take the bulk of the structure calls and then we have quick response vehicles that will take the medical," Jones said.

Jones said they will reopen the fire station as soon they can.
