THOMASVILLE,Ga — The American staple dessert, Swiss Rolls, won’t be rolling out to stores anytime soon.

Lovers of the classic childhood treat are in dismay after a voluntary recall has been announced due to a potential Salmonella contamination in whey powder, an ingredient found in the dessert.

Flowers Foods, Inc. is issuing a recall for Swiss Rolls sold under brand names Mrs. Freshley's, Food Lion, H-E-B, Baker's Treat, Market Square, and Great Value. Captain John Derst's Old Fashioned Bread, which is distributed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, has been recalled as well.

Though it may seem that excessive measures are being taken, contamination can yield grave results. Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Even for healthy people, a Salmonella infection can mean fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Fortunately, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled items.

Manufacturers are encouraging consumers to throw out potentially infected products, or return them to the store for a full refund.
