Amazon said Wednesday that the recently announced Amazon Key service is now available in Metro Atlanta and 36 other metro areas across the nation. Other locations will be added later.
The new service was designed for Amazon Prime members which allows them to receive deliveries and grant secure home access for guests.
“Amazon Key gives customers peace of mind knowing their orders have been safely delivered to their homes and are waiting for them when they walk through their doors,” said Peter Larsen, Vice President of Delivery Technology for Amazon. “Now, Prime members can select in-home delivery and conveniently see their packages being delivered right from their mobile phones.”
Using the Amazon Key app, customers are able to track their in-home delivery through real-time notifications, watch the delivery happen live or review a video of the delivery after it has been completed.
When a delivery driver requests access to a customer's home, Amazon verifies the correct driver is at the correct address at the proper time through an encrypted authentication process.
An Amazon Cloud Cam inside the customer's home begins recording once this process has been completed, and then, the door is unlocked. No special codes or keys are ever provided to delivery drivers.
At that point, the delivery driver will place the package just inside the customer's home and lock the door securely. Drivers will not move on to their next stop until the customer's door has been re-locked.
Amazon Key also lets customers allow trusted people inside their home, like house cleaners, dog walkers, friends or other people.
“Amazon Key will make it even easier to cross a major chore off your to-do list by letting the professionals at Merry Maids take care of the house cleaning while you’re not home,” said Nik Varty, CEO of ServiceMaster, parent company of Merry Maids. “We are thrilled to be teaming up with Amazon so that their customers in need of professional home cleaning services can take advantage of this innovative, convenient and secure service.”
To get started, customers would order the Amazon Key In-Home Kit, which includes the Amazon Cloud Cam indoor security camera and a compatible smart lock from Kwikset or Yale. They would either have the kit installed by a professional or install it themselves. The kit costs $249.99.
