Clarke Co.: Social media threats for school violence a reflection of nation's violence

Schools in Clarke County have been threatened twice on social media.

Police are investigating after someone threatened to carry out a shooting at a local high school.

Both the Clarke County School Police and the Athens-Clarke County Police Departments said the threat was made for Clarke Central High School on social media.

In a statement to 11Alive News, the school district said "Posts were made on various social media outlets of a potential shooting at the school today." But said the agencies worked together to identify the source.

Right now, both agencies said there is no immediate threat to the school.

This is the second threat in Clarke County in days. Last week, someone posted a threat on social media about Cedar Shoals High School in Athens. Chief of Staff for the school district Xeronoa Thomas said the incidents are separate but, "It seems that we are seeing a reflection of the violence and related threats within our country."

RECENT SCHOOL SHOOTINGS ACROSS THE U.S.

On January 23, a student is accused of opening fire and killing two other students at a school in Kentucky.

The day before, there was a shooting at a high school in Texas.

So far in 2018, there have been 11 school shootings.
