Atlanta United VP leaving for executive role with Miami's expansion club

Paul McDonough joined Atlanta United as Director of Soccer Operations in December 2015 and was subsequently promoted to VP 22 months later.

ATLANTA—It's an inevitable function of success in major team sports: Hire good people ... and eventually they'll be poached by other teams.

On Wednesday, Atlanta United announced that Paul McDonough, vice president of soccer operations, had accepted an executive role (Sporting Director) with Miami's franchise, which will begin MLS competition in 2020.

Terms of McDonough's agreement were not disclosed.

Miami's ownership group includes David Beckham and Bolivian businessman Marcelo Claure.

The MLS has a two-phase expansion plan for the not-too-distant future, welcoming Cincinnati into the mix for 2019 and then Miami and Nashville one year later.

McDonough joined the club as Director of Soccer Operations in December 2015 and was subsequently promoted to VP 22 months later. He'll presumably help the yet-to-be-named Miami franchise launch a similar progression plan.

"It's been a pleasure working alongside Paul for the past three years, and we wish him the best of luck in Miami," said Carlos Bocangera, United's vice president and technical director. "We are in a good place at this point in the season, and our focus continues to be to perform at the highest level and work toward our ultimate goal of winning championships."
