POWDER SPRINGS, Ga. -- The accident could have been deadly.

Cyclist Michael Held spotted them out of the corner of his eye as he rode by -- a roll of roofing nails covering the Silver Comet Trail in Powder Springs.

"They were set up across the trail, on the right side where most cyclists would be, face up," he said.

Held said his tire missed the nails by just an inch, and hitting them could have been disastrous.

"You hit that at 25 miles per hour and your front tire is going to blow," he said. "You're immediately on the tarmac, and someone could've been seriously injured."

When Held returned to remove the nails, he said it was clear that whoever put them there wanted to hurt somebody.

"It certainly wasn't an accident," he said. "They were placed there for a reason."

Held called 911, but as no one saw anyone laying down the nails, there was not much police could do.

Held and the police are just asking anyone who uses the Silver Comet Trail to keep their eyes open.
