Body pulled from the Chattahoochee River

The body was recovered near Akers Mill Road, Thursday.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities confirm they have pulled a body from the waters of the Chattahoochee River in Cobb County.

According to police, the body was recovered near Akers Mill Road, Thursday.

The discovery comes just two days after the person went missing in the river near Akers Drive just before 6:30 p.m., Tuesday. Officers and rescue crews arrived then, but couldn't find anyone.

According to police, the victim had tired to swim from one side of the river to the other - just a couple hundred yards - but the current was too strong.

Rescue crews resumed searching the following morning, but were still unable to location. Their searching finally came to an end Thursday when they found the body slightly downstream from where the person went under.

Cobb County Police say people were with the victim, which is how police got reports of the drowning. But, police still cautioned that the swift waters of the Chattahoochee are often unpredictable.

"On occasion, the current is very strong here, so it's always a danger. So, we always recommend having another person," said Officer Neil Penirelli. "We responded as quickly as we possibly could, but unfortunately in situations like this, it just happens extremely fast."

Officials have also not confirmed the identity of the person.
