ATLANTA — An Atlanta Fire Department captain is recovering after being shot in Atlanta's Buckhead community during an apparent armed robbery attempt.
Police believe seeing the captain's badge may have been what triggered one of the two armed men to shoot the victim in the shoulder after the suspects approached him and a woman in the 2900 block of Grandview Avenue.
Police identified the victim as Captain Cecil Level of the fire department's airport detachment.
The armed men initially demanded the victims give up all their belongings during the attempt but ended up escaping a short time later. One of the men left in a newer-model Ford Explorer. and the other ran on foot, got hit by a car and continued running. Police believe the latter gunman may be injured as a result of the accident.
Atlanta police are now on the scene trying to gather more information. However, they reported that the injured fire captain is in stable condition.
