ATLANTA -- Police say a woman was still in the crosswalk when the light turned green on Peachtree Road Sunday. That's when witnesses say a car hit her and then sped away.
Two days later, police are still looking for that car and its driver as the victim continues her recovery from significant injuries. The accident happened in the area of Peachtree Road and E. Shadowlawn Avenue, according to a report from the Atlanta Police Department.
Witnesses and people walking with the victim said that she was crossing in a crosswalk around 2 a.m. when the traffic light changed to green. All other cars at the intersection yielded to the victim. But what was described as a black Dodge Charger drove through and slammed into the woman as she was still crossing.
The 21-year-old pedestrian was pushed on top of the hood, according to witnesses and then thrown from the passenger side of the vehicle to the middle of the road.
Police would arrive to find her lying in a lane 10 feet from the crosswalk where she was apparently hit. She had cuts to her arms and legs along with a swollen right eye.
A witness told police that the car didn't stop or slow down but sped up instead and up and was last seen heading south on Peachtree Road.
Police were able to check a traffic camera where they found a car - either a Charger or Challenger - that roughly matched the suspect vehicle. It had what appeared to be passenger-side windshield damage as it headed away from the accident scene around 2 a.m.
Police are hoping anyone with information about the crash or the suspect will call the Atlanta Police Department with more information.
