BUCKHEAD, Ga. – Atlanta police are looking for a carjacking suspect who fled after crashing a stolen Uber car in Buckhead.

Police said two people, a man and a 15-year-old girl, carjacked an Uber driver from Maple Drive and East Paces Ferry around 2:30 a.m. Friday. The Uber driver told police he was stopped at a red light at the intersection when he was approached by two suspects with handguns.

The victim told police a black man approached his driver side window and a black woman approached the passenger side. Both suspects pointed handguns towards him, so he opened the door and got out, police said.

Officials said the man pulled the victim out of the car and pistol-whipped him before getting into the car and fleeing.

Officers later saw the vehicles traveling on I-75 near Northside Drive and attempted to stop the vehicle. The suspects refused to pull over and after a chase, they crashed the stolen vehicle at a Waffle House in the 5500 block of Northside Drive.

Karima Marshall, a Waffle House, told 11Alive she heard multiple sirens and saw the police coming off the I-285 ramp chasing the car.

Marshall said the vehicle crashed into trees by their parking lot and saw police arrest the 15-year-old girl while the man fled. Marshall said the suspect ran through the Waffle House parking lot and went towards the nearby Starbucks.

“It was so dark over by Starbucks they couldn’t see him and get the opportunity to get him," she said.

Marshall said police checked the Waffle House to make sure the employees and patrons weren’t in harm’s way.

“It’s getting really scary in this area because people think it’s the Buckhead area where all the celebrities live, it’s Sandy Springs, and nothing’s going to happen in this area because it’s ‘nice,’” Marshall said. “Things could happen anywhere.”

Police continue to search for the man as the investigation continues.

Uber sent 11Alive the following statement:

"What this driver experienced is frightening and we’ve reached out to check on his well-being. We will work with police to help with their investigation.”
