ATLANTA — A suspect is in the hospital with a critical wound to the head after police say a bystander attempted to stop a carjacking, was fired upon - and fired back.
The shooting happened in the 3600 block of Powers Ferry Road near a Shell gas station around 1:45 p.m. on Friday. Police said they arrived a short time later to find a man who was not "alert, conscious or breathing."
Police said that they arrived to find a man who was shot in the head and was "not alert, conscious or breathing." he was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition. The preliminary investigation suggests that an SUV with three men in it pulled up to a sedan that was getting gas. Then, an occupant of the SUV exited and attempted to carjack the sedan.
A witness then approached to intervene and one of the suspects opened fire. The witness then returned fire, hitting the carjacker. The SUV escaped from the scene.
The witness remained on the scene and is speaking with investigators. No charges have been filed at this time.
