Gwinnett Fire: Woman's illness not related to suspicious package found in Dillard's store

BUFORD, Ga. -- Gwinnett County fire and the HAZMAT team were called to a Dillard's department store on Thursday for a package with possible hazardous materials in it.

Firefighters responded to the Mall of Georgia at 11:55 am after employees said a package was delivered to their store but they did not know who sent it or where it came from.

As a precaution, the stores on the main level were evacuated as the HAZMAT team and Gwinnett Police arrived to the scene to assist.

According to Gwinnett Fire, the package had been inside the store since Wednesday and it was found in the back at the gift wrap section. It was addressed to a female employee at the store who had opened the package when she received it on Wednesday afternoon and had set it aside and forgotten it.

On that same day, the employee had gotten ill and was transported to the hospital by ambulance. The next day, her co-worker alerted their manager and called 911.

Officials tested the contents for hazardous materials but determined that the package was safe and that the employee's sickness was not due to the package she received.

Another two employees who were on the second floor on Thursday were evaluated by paramedics for minor complaints but it was determined that their illness was also not related to the package.
