100 feet high flames | Firefighters work to contain business fire

The area around the fire was blocked off as crews worked to control the flames.

Atlanta firefighters battled a business fire with flames 100 feet high in southeast Atlanta.

Sgt. Cortez Stafford with Atlanta fire said it happened at Pallet Depot off Sawtell Avenue around 2:40 a.m.

Stafford said the pallets caught on fire and unfortunately, 60 percent of them were burned.

"We sent as many folks over here as we could because this was a raging fire that we needed to get under control," he mentioned.

People in the area claim they heard explosive sounds. The area around the fire was blocked off as crews worked to control the flames. Firefighters evacuated people in nearby homes. Luckily, no one had been injured.

Stafford said they were also able to save nearby businesses, including a body/paint shop - although the shop had a few cars that were damaged. Stafford said his crew will probably be on the scene throughout the morning putting out different hot spots.

This is not the first time Pallet Depot has caught on fire.

"We’ve been to this location before over the years. We are aware of this location. Station two is not too far down street so when they got notification of a fire at this location they got here as fast as they could," said Stafford.
