Businesses lend a helping hand to hurricane evacuees

The Atlanta Motor Speedway is offering discounted RV hookup rates for families coming into Georgia to get away from Hurricane Florence.

Many of Hurricane Florence evacuees are making their way into Georgia. Some are leaving behind their homes, work, and maybe even some family. To help out with the burden, some Georgia businesses and locations are offering their services and some deals.

For the second year in a row, The Atlanta Motor Speedway opens its doors to hurricane evacuees. Bobby Barbour says his family packed up the RV and left the North Carolina coast on Wednesday morning.

"A lot of people weren't really evacuating like I figured they would. They seem to not be taking it seriously," said Barbour.

Barbour says he didn't want to take the risk.

"We really don't know what we are going to have if we are going to have anything to go back to," said Barbour.

Dustin Bixby works at the campgrounds. He says they are offering free hot showers and bathrooms for the evacuees.

"We've done this and just feel like it's the right thing to do. It just gives those folks who are trying to get out of the storm a little peace of mind knowing they have somewhere that they can go," said Bixby.

Other lodging options include Airbnb, Georgia State Parks, and dry camping at We Care Heating and Air at 160-166 South Lake Drive in Perry. Barbour says everyone he's met in the state has shown hospitality.

"I mean they pretty much rolled it out and helped us anyway that they can. That's one thing that I'm grateful for," said Barbour.

Barbour says now his family is looking for easier ways to get around until they can go back home.

"I'm hoping for the best which is what we have had in the past but you never know it's a scary thought ," said Barbour.

Evacuees can hook up an RV at the Atlanta Motor Speedway for $20 a night or set up a dry RV or tent for free. If you have already made your way here and are looking for something to do, you can visit the Wild Adventures Theme park in Valdosta for free with a an ID and proof of residency.
