ATHENS, Ga. — Police say a 78-year-old was hit and killed Wednesday as he tried to cross the street.
According to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, officers responded around 9:30 p.m. to the intersection of West Broad Street in front of the Cadence Bank to find the victim, Carl Lyle Freeman, dead in the road.
Police said Freeman was believed to be crossing West Broad Street back from a FedEx store to the bank, and had made it across six lanes of travel before being hit by a 27-year-old driver of a Ford Ranger truck. Police said the driver stayed on scene.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but police noted it was raining at the time of the crash, and the scene was not well lit. There is no word of whether the driver will face charges.
According to the department, this is the third fatal crash in the Athens area in 2020.
