Chattahoochee Hills explosion that rocked south metro leaves 1 dead

The blast was so dynamic houses in nearby counties shook.

CHATTAHOOCHEE HILLS, Ga. — One person was killed in a large explosion that was felt across the southern metro area Tuesday. Officials in Chattahochee Hills, Ga. said it was apparently a propane tank explosion at a home on Cochran Mill Road.

The Chattahoochee Hills Fire Chief Greg Brett identified the victim as Charles "Chuck" Miller, 83. No one else was inside the home, officials said.

Details of exactly how it happened are still limited, however Chief Brett said it appeared it was likely a vapor explosion inside the home.

According to Brett, the explosion appeared to happen from "the inside out," creating a debris area that "is quite large," Brett explained. The home, he said, was left "significantly damaged." Meanwhile, he said there may have been minor damage like broken glass to nearby homes.

Residents shared on social media reports of rumbles that they thought might be an earthquake.

Residents flooded Twitter with questions about what the boom was. Reports came in from people in southern Fulton, Douglas and Fayette Counties who felt their homes shake.

Brett said that their department was also bombarded with questions, adding to the confusion.

"We got those same calls when we were dispatched, so we didn't know what we were coming to," he said.

Brett said crews are waiting for daylight to continue their investigation with the help of state fire marshals.
