Child shoots self in the face in N.C. Wendy's parking lot

The child was inside the car with his mother at the drive-thru when he got ahold of a handgun and shot himself in the face.

A child is in critical condition after being shot in the face Sunday while in the car at a fast food chain. Randleman police confirm it happened Wendy's on High Point Street around 12:49 pm, while the mom was in the drive-thru line.

Investigators say the child, who was in the backseat of the car, unbuckled the carbooster seat and grabbed a 45-semi-automatic that was stuffed in storage pocket behind the front passenger seat. The gun discharged and a bullet struck the child in the face, police say.

The child is currently at Wake Forest Baptist in critical condition.

The child's father, Randy Brower, told officers he put it there a couple of days ago while cleaning the car and forgot to take it out. The mother didn't know the gun was in the car.

Once their investigation is complete, detectives say they plan to meet with the Randolph County district attorney to see if charges will be filed.
