CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A man who authorities say was threatening to shoot people at a Clayton County apartment complex was hospitalized after being shot by an officer.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the shooting happened around 3 p.m. Friday at the Laurel Pointe Apartments in the 200 block of Morrow Road in the Forest Park area.

According to a preliminary investigation by the GBI, Clayton County Police responded to the complex just after 3 p.m. after getting reports of a man who was threatening to shoot people there.

When officers got there, one of them tried to make contact with 22-year-old Justin Demond Johnson, but the GBI said Johnson ran.

An officer chased after him and commanded Johnson to stop. During the chase, Clayton County Police said Johnson pulled out a weapon. That's when the officer fired his weapon twice, shooting Johnson at least once, according to the department. The GBI said officers recovered a gun at the scene.

The 22-year-old was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, and is now stable. The officer, whose name has not been released, was not hurt in the exchange.

According to GBI spokesperson Nelly Miles, this is the 23rd officer-involved incident the agency has been requested to investigate so far this year.
