Conyers Middle School evacuated, students hospitalized after reporting feeling faint

About 25 people were inside the school for a weekly meeting when multiple students started feeling faint. A 6th grader also became unresponsive.

CONYERS, Ga. — School officials say several middle schoolers are recovering after fumes inside Conyers Middle School forced more than two dozen people to evacuate the building.

According to officials with the Rockdale County School system, about 25 people – students, parents and teachers – were inside the school for a weekly ROTC civil air patrol meeting around 5:30 p.m. when a few students started feeling faint. At some point, a 6th grader became unresponsive and first responders were called.

Emergency crews transported the 6th grader to an Atlanta-area hospital, while "several others" were taken to Rockdale Piedmont Emergency Room. They were later released, and reported feeling much better after getting fresh air. The 6th grader also regained consciousness and was released from the hospital the following day.

According to a spokesperson for the district, cleaning crews were there cleaning the restrooms with an approved bleach-based cleaner, and said its possible the fumes may have played a role. Fire crews evacuated the school as a precaution, but after clearing the scene, people were allowed back inside.

Fire crews took readings of the air quality from inside the school and said carbon monoxide and other air levels appeared to be normal.
