ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — A community has come together to help a family in need after a toddler died weeks after being pulled from a backyard pool.

Trevor Bohannon, the mother's boyfriend, was arrested and charged. Investigators said he was supposed to be looking after the children but failed to do so.

Several days later, the family said the little boy who narrowly survived drowning that day died just this week. Now, they’re celebrating the little child’s life and honoring his memory.

“He was just like very energetic and just sweet and outgoing,” Morales’ aunt, Paula Pedroza said.

He would’ve turned three this week. It would have been a time for family and friends to come together and celebrate his big day.

“He loved fire trucks,” Paula said. “That’s why you see a lot of fire-theme shirts and stuff like that out here because he loved fire trucks.”

Instead, the family of Jose, known lovingly as “Juju,” gathered Saturday at the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office to highlight their fond memories of his short life and to raise money to offset funeral costs.

Juju died on Mother’s Day.

“We have a lot of friends and family and people we don’t even know to come out here and support,” Paula said.

Emergency dispatchers got the call on April 25 to a drowning on Blackberry Lane in Conyers.

When first responders pulled up, they found two toddlers in the back yard that had just been pulled from the pool.

It was Juju and his sister. Deputies said she was okay as crews performed CPR on Juju. He was taken to the hospital where he passed away weeks later.

Bohannon was locked up. Police said he was supposed to be keeping a close eye on the two kids. Now, with Juju's death, his charges have been upgraded to murder in the second degree.

“The past three weeks, basically, we have been in and out going to the hospital to see him,” Paula said of the little boy.

Less than a week after his death, the community came out to support his family with t-shirts, signs, balloons and a hashtag on social media.

“He had a lot of people that loved him,” Paula said.

Juju’s family said his funeral will be Monday. Family is excepting donations at a GoFundMe page titled Ju Funeral Expenses.
