Virginia brothers involved in high-speed Conyers crash | One dead, another jailed

The passenger was armed and wanted for failure to register as a sex offender among other crimes, police said.

CONYERS, Ga. — A Virginia man is dead and his brother in jail after a crash involving a stolen vehicle in Rockdale County.

The incident happened just after 4 a.m. Saturday when a Conyers Police Department license plate reader alerted them to a stolen 2018 Toyota Corolla near the Walmart on Dogwood Drive.

From there, officers attempted to box the car in while parked in the lot, but the driver was able to maneuver out and escape to the east on Dogwood Drive heading toward Salem Road.

Deputies who spotted the car said the 19-year-old driver then sped down the road at speeds over 100 mph. Unaware that it was the stolen car just reported by Conyers, they put out an alert of a reckless driver.  With the sun not yet up, the driver then turned off all of his lights as deputies and officers attempted to catch him. Conyers police said they all ended their pursuit when they determined conditions weren't safe to continue. They lost sight of the car as it approached Salem but the teen driver never stopped.

The driver, later identified as Demetris Taylor, soon lost control while trying to take a curve near Leer Trucking and hit a tree. The crash ultiamtely killed him.

The passenger in the car, 23-year-old Lyndell Taylor was taken to Atlanta Medical Center with minor injuries and later to jail for having marijuana and a handgun at the time of the accident. As a convicted felon and sex offender who failed to register, the surviving brother now faces additional charges as he awaits extradition back to Virginia in a Rockdale County jail cell.
