COWETA COUNTY, Ga. -- The Coweta County's information technology servers were compromised as a result of a ransomware attack. It happened around 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

The Coweta County Sheriff's Office posted on its Facebook page that the attack did not impact individual workstations, phone systems, or externally hosted solutions.

"This attack, while very serious, was not as harmful as originally thought due to the limited exposure of the attack to all servers and available backups," the post said.

However, the ransomware attack impacted local public safety systems, forcing those agencies to use backup systems for radio communications and its manual recordkeeping systems.

The sheriff's department said the County IT staff shutdown all servers to evaluate the impact as a precaution.

County 911 phone service and other county phone systems were not affected and are operational, but external email is not at this time. Officials said it may take a few days to restore all services back to normal.
