Skimmer found in downtown Atlanta | Police fear there are more

The device included one clue to suggest its one of multiple devices.

ATLANTA — Police are warning the public after finding a credit card skimmer on an ATM machine in downtown Atlanta.

Police discovered the item on Friday after an eagle-eyed customer noticed something wasn't right while in a store in the 200 block of Peachtree Center Avenue.

The customer saw that the front of the reader appeared loose and soon realized what they saw was actually the skimming device. That person then brought the item to the cashier who called police.

More unnerving to police is that the device had the number four written on it suggesting that there are others being used.

Skimmers are used by criminals to steal credit and debit card information from seemingly normal devices like gas pumps and, in this case, an ATM machine.

Investigators are telling people to examine any credit or debit card reader slots carefully before swiping or inserting their card. Anyone who finds something suspicious should alert the business and call police.

Police also advise that people watch their bank and credit card accounts for suspicious activity and let those establishments know if they find something that appears wrong.
