The GBI is investigating after a man died following a confrontation with a Cobb County police officer early Friday.
It was around 3 a.m. when the driver of a white Dodge Caravan sped past a Cobb County Police officer in a marked patrol car heading westbound on Roswell Road, police said.
The officer attempted a traffic stop, but the driver of the Dodge Caravan crashed, hitting another car. The crash happened the curve of the southbound ramp to the South Marietta Parkway which leads to I-75.
Officers tried to arrest the driver of the Dodge Caravan, but said he became combative. During the confrontation, one officer deployed his Taser. The driver became unresponsive and was taken to the hospital where he died.
Investigators said several officers suffered minor injuries during the confrontation with the driver, but did not need immediate medical attention.
The driver of the vehicle that was hit also suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Now, the GBI is investigating the officer's use of force during this incident.
The name of the driver who died will not be released as investigators are still working to notify family members.
