East Cobb homeowner's charges upgraded after fatally shooting contractor: Police

Larry Joel Epstein is now being charged with felony murder.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — An East Cobb homeowner now faces serious charges after police say he fatally shot a contractor after doing work at his home.

Officers were dispatched to Wellington Lane March 6 to investigate an aggravated assault and aggravated battery. When they got there, they found 37-year-old Gordon Montcalm of Buchanan, Georgia shot multiple times. They also found 21-year-old Jake Allen Horne shot in the head.

First responders took both men to the hospital in serious condition, however Horne died from his injuries

The situation also triggered a brief standoff between SWAT officers and the homeowner - 68-year-old Larry Joel Epstein - but they were eventually able to get him surrender and take him into custody.

Initially, police charged Epstein with two counts each of aggravated assault with the intent to murder and aggravated battery. But, after Horne's death, police confirmed those charges would be upgraded.

Police said they are still investigating the motive, but believe the shooting was tied to a home contractor dispute. The men were there doing electric work at Epstein's home and they were shot as they attempted to leave after completing their workday, according to officers.

Epstein is currently being held without bond at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center. He made a first appearance before a Cobb County judge Thursday night. The next court appearance is set for March 26.

Meanwhile, family has set up a GoFundMe for Horne.
